{"id":1008,"date":"2017-07-07T14:13:36","date_gmt":"2017-07-07T19:13:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.universaltaxidispatch.com\/blog\/?p=1008"},"modified":"2017-07-07T14:13:36","modified_gmt":"2017-07-07T19:13:36","slug":"truck-safety-ordinance-moves-chicago-towards-a-vision-zero-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.universaltaxidispatch.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/truck-safety-ordinance-moves-chicago-towards-a-vision-zero-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Truck safety ordinance moves Chicago towards a Vision Zero future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last week,\u00a0the Mayor\u2019s Office announced the introduction of a truck safety ordinance\u00a0to City Council as part of its renewed\u00a0Vision Zero initiative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The announcement represents the city following through on one of the commitments in the recently released\u00a0Vision Zero Action Plan\u00a0to eliminate all traffic fatalities in Chicago by 2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Contractors will be required to phase in the installation of safety equipment, starting on January 1, 2018, with full compliance required by January 1, 2021. The city is also committing to the same standards for their own fleet of trucks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The equipment to be installed at the contractor\u2019s expense includes\u00a0mirrors to increase visibility of people walking and people biking\u00a0for drivers, as well as\u00a0lateral protective devices, also known as side guards, to decrease injury due to collision.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0Vision Zero campaign\u00a0is supported by data that demonstrates traffic fatalities are preventable and the moral imperative that all traffic fatalities are unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After six people biking were killed in crashes with commercial vehicles last summer, the need for a truck safety ordinance became even more painfully clear. Active Trans joined others in the bicycling community in\u00a0calling on the city to strengthen its safety regulations for large vehicles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Chicago Department of Transportation, 33 pedestrians and cyclists have been killed by large vehicles on Chicago streets since 2010. If a truck is involved in a crash, the chance of a fatality triples.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The safety equipment required as part of the ordinance is proven to save lives. This ordinance will not just help create safer streets for bikers but also for pedestrians who are the most vulnerable roadway users.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Crash victim Dee Palagi, who spoke with Active Trans this past spring,\u00a0told DNAinfo, &#8220;this [ordinance] should have already been in place. But it is a good thing moving forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although the timeline for the implementation for this ordinance is lengthy, it\u2019s an important step in reducing the number of serious and fatal crashes involving large vehicles.
