Walter Burnett Jr. hopes a ban that would prohibit street parking from 7 to 9 a.m. weekdays\u00a0\u2014 but make an exception for West Loop residents\u00a0\u2014 can be approved by the City Council soon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If all goes well, new parking signs could be installed by\u00a0summer, Burnett\u00a0told DNAinfo\u00a0Monday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unlike a previous pilot program that banned parking from\u00a01:30 to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays, residents would be able to obtain a permit to park on streets from 7 to 9 a.m. weekdays. The proposed ordinance aims to improve parking in an area bound by West Van Buren Street on the south, West Washington Street on the north,\u00a0Green Street on the east and\u00a0Ashland Avenue on the west.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under the draft ordinance, signs prohibiting parking from 7 to\u00a09 a.m. on weekdays would be installed on more than\u00a020\u00a0blocks, including:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><u><strong>Northeast area<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2022 <strong>1-150 N. Morgan St., <\/strong>two blocks on the east side of the street between Randolph and Madison<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2022 <strong>100-150 N. Sangamon St.,<\/strong> one block on the east side of the street between Randolph and Washington<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2022 <strong>1-100 N. Sangamon St., <\/strong>half-block on the west\u00a0side of the street between Washington and Madison<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2022 <strong>1-150 N. Peoria St.,<\/strong> two blocks on the east side of the street between Randolph and Madison<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><u><strong>Central area<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2022 <strong>1-100 N. Elizabeth St.,<\/strong> half-block on east side of the street between Washington and Madison<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2022 <strong>1-100 N. Loomis St.,<\/strong> one block on east side of the street between Adams and Jackson<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2022 <strong>300-400 S. Loomis St.,<\/strong> one block on the west side of the street between Jackson and Van Buren<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2022 <strong>200-400 S. Throop St., <\/strong>one block on the west side of the street between Adams and Van Buren<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The ordinance, co-sponsored by West Loop aldermen\u00a0Danny\u00a0Solis (25th)\u00a0and Jason Ervin (28th),\u00a0was introduced to the city&#8217;s Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety on\u00a0January 21, 2015 \u2014 more than two years ago\u00a0\u2014 but has been stuck\u00a0in committee since.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With development booming and construction crews taking over large parts of the West Loop, aldermen now aim to pass the ordinance soon so the more than 100 new signs can be installed this summer, Burnett said, giving West Loop residents\u00a0much-needed parking relief.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>RELATED:\u00a0McDonald&#8217;s Bringing 2,000 Jobs, &#8216;Iconic&#8217; Brand Back To Chicago With New HQ<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Because\u00a0the area is ever-evolving, Burnett said some changes could be made regarding the\u00a0specific streets that get signs before the plan is approved. Neighbors were requesting changes at a development meeting hosted by the West Loop Community Organization and Solis\u00a0last week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;We are trying to get this done before the interest and the concerns of the area change,&#8221; Burnett\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Failed midday parking ban<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The new morning parking ban comes after a\u00a0midday parking ban in the West Loop was abandoned after neighborhood groups pushed to end the pilot program in 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From July through December in 2013, drivers were prohibited from parking along\u00a0select neighborhood streets\u00a0from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the time, Armando Chacon,\u00a0president of the West Central Association, said the restrictions were\u00a0&#8220;not received overly well&#8221; and made\u00a0&#8220;the parking situation even worse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although the ban was able to reduce day-trippers, local residents didn\u2019t like it because there was no exception for them, Chacon said.
